the icm and coil both check out ok. the distributor cap and rotor are new. diagrams in books show a crank position sensor both in the distributor and behind the crank pulley. Could these be the problem and are there checks for them. Could it more likely be the ecm? thanks, Bob

Do you have ignition sparks at the plugs?

Was any repairs carried out prior to this happening?

Was the timing belt checked?

Is the Check Engine Light going off after 2 seconds when igniton switch is turned ON?

Did you check the fuel pressure?

no spark at the plugs. just bought the car. they replaced the distributor with a used one. timing belt is ok-rotor button turns. engine light stays on. fuel pressure is ok. If the distributor is off a tooth , will that prevent spark?

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town and just got back.

If the CEL stays on, you need to retrieve the trouble code to find out what is wrong. Quite often a faulty ECM would cause no sparks conditions. With the CEL staying on all the time, I would suspect the ECU to be faulty, quite common for your model

Before checking the ECU, ensure the groun d connections at the thermostat housing is correctly and securely connected.

Of a tooth distributor would not stop ignition sparks.

ECU is the engine control unit, computer.

Test terminal 16 of Diagnostic Link Connector for battery. If battery volatage is available, check the ECU connectors for looseness or contaminations.

If all are good, the ECU is bad and not communicating with the reader.
