Engine overheats with no visible exterior leaks, there is a lot of white residue around the flange on the exhaust manifold, could the oxygen sensor cause this overheating or is this more serious problem

No, the oxygen sensor will not cause an overheat.

First thing I would check is to make sure you have enough coolant in the system and that is it PROPERLY BLED! I cannot stress how many times I have seen DIY'ers not properly bleed coolant and have their engine overheat.

Next check is your thermostat. With the car at operating temperature both rad hoses should feel about the same temperature.

Is your cooling fan coming on when its overheating? If not, then something is going on.

LMK and I can help.

I’m having this same exact problem and I’m located in nyc - can’t find an honest mechanic to save my life! My 93 del sol is over heating the radiator fan isn’t kicking on, my dads down in south Florida he said it could be a lot of things but these mechanics are just ridiculous out here (northern bronx) my father thinks it’s the sensor, thermostat, fuse, I just don’t want to ruin my head gasket

It sounds like the fan motor is burned out. Here are two guides to help us see whats going on:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-overheating-or-running-hot

and

Please run down these guides and report back.
