Thank you for replying to my 1st message. I have drilled two holes in my thermostat a 1/8 inch and 3/16ths inch. 3/16ths seems better and allows more coolent flow. The head gasket and motor was checked a couple of yrs ago, was good. There is considerable improvement. I checked the operation of my fan, it's running at idle when it's supposed to like you said. Went to the junkyard and got a new overflow cap and this has improved cooling down for sucking the coolent back into the motor at a faster rate. My car does not have "steam" or "white smoke" anymore since I believe the stat holes take pressure off the motor. I checked my egr valve and it's clean (not blocked) but I heard about them being "stuck open". What would cause an egr valve to stick open? I've thought about my intake gasket being bad since my carb. runs lean. can you tell me your thoughts on all of this?
Thanks again for your help! :)

Excessive carbon buildup can cause the EGR valve to be stuck open but that seldom occurs and if it did, you would have erratic idling.

Lean running could be due to vacuum leakages, fuel float level, valve clearances and idle mixture.
