Serpentine Belt

You need to turn the auto-tensioner lever (19mm hex head) to release the tension and get the belt out.

Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Honda CRV 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 50,000 miles

Mechanic recommends changing drive belt because of years (10) versus mileage (50K). This is expensive so I want to make sure I need it. Obviously don't drive much: move from one side of the street to the other most of the time. Also recommends flushing transmission, etc.

The manufacturer recommends replacing the drive belts at 8 years or 108 k miles whichever occurs first as the belts would age over time and become brittle with the tendency to break.

If you do not wish to replace th belt, it would be adviseable to have a visual inspection done to confirm the belt is still in good condition.

Transmission flushing is strongly advised against by Honda so I would say no to it.

As to other maintenence items, it would depend on what has been recommended.

What would cause the POWER Steering/AC belt to brake off? I was driving with the AC on and I smelled some weird smell coming from my air vent so I shut the air vent off and it kept smelling bad. I drove for another 10 minutes and realized my front end was smoking when I parked my car. We looked under the hood and found this belt lying on the engine shield or what ever under the car.
The part number is 4PK845 I looked it up and found out what it was and am wondering how expensive it is to fix this and also should I replace all the other belts at the same time and could I have prevented this? Would the air compressor cause this damage and if it needs replacement would it be all right to get one generic brand off ebay? Or should it come from Honda? I'm a single mom who is unemployed and don't have much money right now. Any advice will be appreciated.

You will have to check that all the individual pulleys spin freely and are not noisy, if all ok i would be a good idea to replace all the belts, these PK belts are readily available at most spare part outlets and you wont have to replace then with genuine.
