I have had a whining noise for 3 or so years now that I can't pinpoint. It's a whining sound very similar to the sound a car makes when it's put into reverse. It appears to be coming from the front, and my first impulse is the transmission. However, you can distinctly hear the transmission changing gears, and that sound seems normal. Does this sound like a transmission issue or an axle issue, like a CV joint or pinion gear? Thanks!

It might be a belt/pulley issue.

Check the conditions of your belts, pulleys (especially your A/C idler pulley). Or it may be your timing belt as well. If they are tensioned too tight, they will whine.

I have a whining noise like reversing but louder. It sounds like its coming from under or in front of the glove box. It sounds like a damn airplane in my car and the noise gets louder when accelerating and it only happens when the A/C is on. Could that be the A/C idler pulley? I know it's not the timing belt i replaced that 6 months ago....

Hi,

The idea that it only happens with the A/C on points us in that direction. Tell me, does the sound change when you change the fan speed in the vehicle? I ask because the blower motor is located behind the glove box.

Also, is it possible for you to record the noise and upload it for me to hear?

Let me know.
