This question applies to a 2002 Honda Civic Coupe LX. It has a 1.7L four cylinder engine with about 98k on it.
Several months ago I started noticing a popping or knocking sound coming from the front driver's side wheel well. It is not a continuous series of pops or knocks as is often symptomatic of a failing CV joint. Rather there is a single loud pop that eminates from that area of the car whenever I hit a bump or cross uneven pavement.
Today I replaced the front driver's side strut thinking that it would solve the problem (doing so to the front passenger's side strut solved a similar problem last year). Upon driving the car after the strut replacement, the popping sound was still there.
Do I need to replace the rubber mounting pad that goes between the spring and the top-plate of the strut assembly as well? I didn't do this today, but another source I read suggested that when these pads wear out they can cause the knocking sounds I'm hearing. I wanted to get a second opinion though on this forum.
Any other ideas? Am I on the right track?
