My 96 Civic has a faster than normal idle and surges like someone was slightly pressing the accelerator at idle. the only trouble code I get is for an Oxygen sensor. Can this cause the surging or is something else the most likely culprit.

96 Civic DX, 1.6 ltr 124K. I will definately make a donation if I get some info to solve this problem.

Thanks,

Phil

The O2 code is important. Does it reference Bank1 Sensor 1? The sensor does more to make the engine run smoothly. The surging could and probably is caused by the O2. Does it only do it cold, warm, or all the time when you are not touching the accelerator?

Surging is often caused by a vacuum leak or a coolant level or air in the coolant problem.

to answer your question the code only refered to the O2 sensor I don't think it said bank one but I'm not sure. The surging starts happening after the engine has warmed up.

You might check your throttle position sensor. Honda's are famous for these surges. Also, check if there is a leak from your air filter to the throttle. Good Luck.

Here is what I would do. You take it anyway you want.

I would find the code so I could determine which of the O2 sensors is bad.

Replace the sensor and test. If no problems, great. If the problems persist then:

Check the coolant level
Take off the Idle Air Control valve (IAC) and clean it very well. It has coolant that flows through it and air.
Purge the cooling system of any air. Air in the coolant will give a misreading to the computer.
Check for leaks in the vac lines.
