We have a 2006 Honda Civic that is making a clacking noise, and the faster the engine speed, the louder and faster this noise goes. As far as we can tell the engine runs really great. If it werent for this noise, we wouldnt think anything is wrong with it. We took it to a mechanic, and he pulled the oil filter, took it apart, and said that he found bearings and shavings inside. He told us that cylinder four had a bent valve. My question is, what could have caused this, what needs to be fixed, and how much would that cost. Also, is it ok to drive the car without doing more damage?

Hi david,

If it is a bent valve, the engine would not be running great, you would have loss of power and the idling would be erratic as one of the cylinders is not firing.

If bearing shavings are found in the oil filter, most likely one of more of the con-rod bearings ia/are bad. You should get the bearings checked immediately and if there are no major damage yet, replacing the bearings should solve the problem.

The longer you drag on, the more likely you are going to damage the engine and it could come to a stage where the engine has to be replaced as rebuilding might be too costly.
