clutch engages when a/c is turned off and disengages when a/c is turned on.

thought ac was out with 200,000mi. and replaced compressor, exp vlv, dryer with new parts and correct charge in system.

still did not work correctly and realized clutch was operating reverse from expected, no work has been done to any part of electrical system.

what could cause reversal of clutch operation in this model car

the only way to keep the clutch disengaged and get no freezing, engine bog down, or belt slip, is to leave the fan on and AC switch on

Hi david knisley,

Symptoms indicates a possible fault with the PCM or communication error between the multiplex control unit and PCM. The compressor clutch relay is controlled by the PCM Terminal E 18.

This model is known to have faults with the PCM circuit for the compressor but most of them are for the compressor not engaging after some time.

This guide can help us fix it

Please run down this guide and report back.

Okay... Here is the order I would do things. First, make sure the fuse isn't bad. Next, check for power to the blower motor. If there is power, the motor is most likely bad. If no power, you need to work back through resister, relay, and switch to see where power is lost.

Air Conditioning problem
2004 Honda Civic 4 cyl Automatic

Hi,

Could someone please provide me with the A/C schematics for 2004 Honda Civic if you have one? My friend and I are trying to figure out why my A/C doesn't work.

The following are checked, but he decided that there is a relay problem. If we have the schematics it would help us a lot to trace the problem. Thank you.

1. Compressor OK
2. Fuse OK
3. Dryer Receiver OK

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I forgot to mentioned that we also checked the freon level and it was okay. The clutch does engaged the compressor, but doesn't disengaged automatically.

Hi,

Do you happen to know where this HVAC unit is located? Could the problem also be the Accumulator? Sorry for lots of questions.

2004 Honda Civic ex. When started in cold weather the car will not warm up. After running for 7-10 minutes on the hiway it will then start to blow hot air thru the heater but as soon as I get to a stop sign or anytime it needs to idle, it starts to blow cold air again within 10 seconds. We tried changing the thermostat, no help.

It's the main control of the AC/Heating system.

MY A/C was working on Friday. When I got in the car on Saturday. It stayed cold while it was working then all of a sudden just would not work anymore. The blower doesn't even come on when I turn on the blower switch. Even if i just turn on the heater the blower will not come on. All fuses that I can find are good. Even the cooling fan runs but I don't know if there is a separate fan for the A/C. What else besides fuses can I check? If there is a relay problem how do I test it?

Hi bscott157,

What you are facing is a fault with the blower fan motor.

Try banging on the blower motor housing and test if the blower starts working. If yes, the motor carbon has worn off and requires replacement.

Would this keep the a/c compressor from kicking in?

No, the compressor should still kick in if it is turned ON. Just that the compressor might not stay on for too long as the cooling coil would be cold and when that happens, the compressor would cut off.

The compressor isn't coming on either. Nothing with the a/c works at all now and this just happened all at once. Could the blower switch inside the passenger compartment be bad since the blower wont come on when the heater is set to come on as well?

It would more likely be a fuse problem since so many items failed at the same time.

Check the underhood fuses.

All those fuses are good as I stated in the original question. Are there any more fuses anywhere in the vehicle that could be causing this? Could it be a relay?

Here are the schematics for the AC. Check through them for fuses and relay. Here is a guide to help you test the relay and wiring diagrams to help you see how the system works.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

The high side should be operating at between 180 to 250 and I am surprised it is showing 50.

The low side should be around 30.

When compressor has been stopped for a while, both readings should read at abut 90. Please recheck the pressure reading.

You're welcome and glad to know you have fixed the problem.

By the way if the gas level was low, you should monitor the situation aa there could possibly be a leak somewhere and problem would recur.
