Pre-purchase of this car revealed new front pads, but thin rotors. A spring-like thud or clunk sound occurs when the brakes are applied. More common at lower speeds. Brakes squeal sometimes. Groan during low-speed stop/go city driving and backing down driveway. Considering DYI pad and rotor change. Will that relieve the thud/clunk, squeals, and groans?

I would replace the pads and rotors as well as a new hardware kit, check the operation of caliper slides.

Also inspect the outer and inner CV boots as well as ball joints and tie rod ends.

Rotors that are below minumum specs, will cause the calipers pistons to overextend, the rotors to warp, and will usually ruin the pads.
