2000 Honda Civic No start at stock ignition timing

During cold starts, I have to advance the timing by a lot (by rotating the distributor counter-clockwise) to get the car started. What could be some underlying issues causing this? I have no CELs.

After the engine is a bit warm, I can get the car started on stock ignition timing.

Not, many. this could be a stretched timeing belt or a faulty distributor. worn cam. not much else
