I have a 99 civic hatch with 135000mls my break lights don't work but my running lights do I checked the fuses and they are all good I checked the bulbs and the spoiler bulb was burnt so I replaced it thinking it could be a linkage to all three lights. So I replaced the spoiler bulb pressed the breaks and the only one that works is the spoiler breaklight. I also checked the plunger and conector and its all good and clean also the wires are good too. Could it be a bad ground for the two rear tail lights? Thanks for your help!

I checked both rear tailights all bulbs. And they seem to be the same bulb number match as the other. I've notice that when I turned on the running lights the Left side (driver) lower light didn't come on so I tapped the tail light and I came on I know that it means bulb going bad soon. What could it be? I know its somthing simple. Thanks for taking your time to help me.

The brake and taillights are 2 different circuit in one bulb and they can fail individually. Get the bulbs replace and retest.

The brake lights on the right side do not work, the ones on the left work great. Also, all the tail light and turn signal lights work great. I have replaced both bulbs in the right side and checked the fuses. I noticed the right side was out when I got up one morning and noticed the brake lights were all on except the right side. I was able to fix that. It was little plastic piece in the brake pedal that rubs against the brake switch when you let off the brake. Thanks for your help

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

The first thing I need you to do is check for power to the socket. You will need a test light. Here are general directions for using a test light as well as how to test wiring:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-a-test-light-circuit-tester

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

If there is power to the light socket, either the socket is bad or there is a grounding issue.

I have attached a schematic for your vehicle. There will be three wires at the socket. One will be green/white, one will be red/black, and one black. The one that is all black is the ground. The red/black is the power supply to the light. It should have 12 volts when you press the brake. The green/white will also take power to the third brake light, so it should also show power. If you get power to the red/black wire, check and confirm the ground is good by checking continuity. You will need a multi meter for that. It basically checks to see if there is a completed ground connection between the black wire and the car's body.

Take a look at the schematic to locate ground locations. I realize you indicated little knowledge. Do not be intimidated with this process. It is not as hard as it appears.

Do this first and let me know if you need help, have questions, or need additional information.

Take care,
Joe

The only way for that to happen is the turn signal wiring/license lite are shorted together.

The right rear brake light in my car is not illuminating even after I replaced the bulb. I haven't checked the fuse yet, but I don't think this is the problem as the left brake light still works. I'm not sure what to do next so would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

It is not a fuse problem. You need testings to find out what is wrong. Power supply, bulb, socket and ground cirsuits are possibilities. Have you tried swapping the left and right bulbs?

Thanks for the responses. I don't have a multimemter but can get one. I'm just not sure what to test. I haven't tried switching the two bulbs, but I put a brand new bulb in the right socket and there was still no light so I know it's not a problem with the bulb.

It could be a fault with the socket itself. Get a DVOM, set to 20 volt range, or test light and get a helper to depress the brake pedal while you remove the bulb that is not working and probe center of the socket with the red probe and ground the other probe to any body part that has continuity. Usually a bolt tightened to body would do.

If battery voltage is available, the wiring is good.

Btw new bulbs are not guaranteed to work. Try swapping between sides first.

The battery may be bad. Take it to an Advance Auto or Auto Zone and they will test it for free. Also check you battery cable connections at both ends. Make sure you have a tight corrosion free metal to metal fit.

Get a testlight or a voltmeter. With the brake pedal depressed ensure that there is power getting to the socket. If not, I would first check your brake switch. If there is power, the cause might be a poor or corroded ground.

Since I got the car, my friend who was following me the entire trip home said I didn't have any stop lights. Went to check out what's wrong the other night. Bulbs are good, or at least one of them is, because when I turn on the fog lights, the left side rear light/stop light turns on. I think the fuses are okay because if I'm not mistaken, the fuse under the hood is for horn/stop lights, the horn works, stop lights don't. Or I could be wrong.

Hello,

This could just be a problem with the bulbs being burnt out. Most taillight/brake light bulbs are two in one bulbs. Even if the tail lights are working, the brake lights can still be burnt out. I have included a link down below for you to go to.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/brake-lights-not-working

Otherwise I have included in the diagrams down below all of your vehicle's fuse box and tail light wiring diagrams for you. Please get back to us with what you find out.

Thanks,
Alex

My brake lights are not working. I have replaced the bulbs, checked the fuses, and pulled the brake switch and tested it with a multi tester. After testing the switch and it being ok I put it back in and they worked for a while. The other day a man told me that the lights were not working so when I got home I pushed in the pedal and they were on. This morning someone else told me that they were not working again. I am pretty sure that it must be the wiring, but I do not know where to begin checking. I cant afford to go to a shop, but I am pretty handy, so if you could give me some recommendations on what and where and how to check, I would be very grateful.

update: This morning I got in my car and hit the brakes and they lit up, so I let off and tried again and they lit up. After the two working tries they quit. No brake lights the whole way to work.

Hi Wikedeye,

Thank you for the donation.

The brake switch is bad and intermittently not working. To test if it is the cause, when the brake lights do not work, use a test lamp to probe the brake switch with pedal depressed. If there is input and no output, the switch is bad.

Alternatively when the brake lights do not work, unplug the brake switch connector and bridge the brake circuit terminals, if lights comes on, the switch is bad.

I came home and checked the switch with a voltage check light and both wire had signal. Then I jumped the circuit with a wire and the lights came on so I got a new switch and now I have lights. Thank you for the help, I will be asking more questions here in the future. Thanx again.

Make sure there is power to the switch. Make sure there is power out of the switch. If there is, there has to be a break between the switch and lights. NOTE: Check body grounds too, but they should be fine if everything else is working.

Brakes problem
1992 Honda Civic 4 cyl

I just got new brakes put in my car. No more then a week passed and the brakes were not working at all. The brake light has been on. Now there is fluid shooting out from somewhere. Why is this and what exactly do I have to do to get this repaired?

You have a brake leak somewhere in your braking system.

I would definately not recommend driving until you have resolved this issue.

It could be a rotted brake line, flex hose, wheel cylinder, things of that nature. Is the leak coming from the front? rear? middle of the vehicle?

First thing to do is check all your fuses. A blown fuse can cause strange electrical issues. It's a simple and easy check to be made.

If all the fuses are intact, I would check your brake switch, The power wire may be shorting out somewhere, or the ground wire may be weak or open.
