Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Honda Civic 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 55200 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Purchased a 1999 Honda Civic EX 2 door coupe in January '08 with 53,000 miles, changed oil and filter after purchase, and at 55,200 miles (2200 miles later) oil level is down over a quart. "Finger test" of exhaust pipe resulted in very black residue in pipe. No noticeable oil burning smell or burning oil at startup or any other time, and no oil spots on garage floor or in engine compartment, so oil leak does not appear likely. Will replacement of rings likely repair this issue? If so any idea on cost estimate? Plan to get car into shop this week for analysis and estimate, any insights would be appreciated.

Hi twhite47,

I would recommend replacing the valve seals instead of the piston rings.
