I am new to working on cars. I just replaced the brake pads on both front tires (as it was making a horrid grinding noise when braking). In the process, some brake fluid leaked (unscrewed wrong bolt). When trying out the brakes, the pedal can hit the floor where usually it stops half way down. Car DOES brake but no where near the stopping power it had before.

Why does it do this/what can I do to fix it?

If there's no actual leakage bleed the brakes if it continues replace the brake master cylinder.
