1996 Honda Civic rear wheel scraping badly

hi i got a 96 honda civic lx 4 door.. i got hit in the back passagenger side.. i went and replaced the whole back wheel asembly except the shock.. now when i drive the car if there is the driver and one other person in the car my tire makes a loud scrapeing noise every time i hit any type of bump and when i turn left it makes the same scrapeing noise... would that be the shock doing that?? in other words does the shock needs replaced???

Hi computertech247,

It is possible for the shocks to be bent causing the tires to brush against the fender arch. You need to check where the contact or noise is coming from.

A visual inspection would be required.

thank you very much for you reply KHLOW2008... can you tell me what i am looking for in the visual inspection?? and whould i need special tools to replace the bad one with a good one??? and what tools do i need?? and does that mean i will have to replace both sides if the one is bad?? thanks for your time and i hope to hear from you soon have a good day..

Following are things to look out for.

1. Abrasion marks. On inner wheel arch, body or strut housing.
2. Compare tire angle between right and left. If a tire is slanting more than the other, it could be a bent strut housing.

Tools would depend on what to replace/repair.
If it is struts that require replacing, you would need a spring compressor. To eliminate this, get a used strut assy from the scrap yard, it should come as an assy and does not require any special tools.

It is not necessary to replace both sides at the same time if you are using used ones. If replacing with new struts, it would be preferable to replace both.

You would need a jack to lift up vehicle and stands to hold before proceeding with ay work. Removal of wheel would provide better access to the area.

Others are basic tools, 12 mm, 14mm, 17mm hex spanners and alan key only if strut replacement is done.
