Engine Mechanical problem
1989 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 180k miles

Help! I have a 1989 Honda Civic Hatchback that dies randomly when I'm on the highway! It isn't running hot or cutting out or anything. I'll just be driving along and it will die. The electrics and radio stays on, but I have to coast to the side of the road to wait for it to restart, which takes anywhere from 10 mins to 2 1/2 hours!! I have had all sorts of people tell me all sorts of things it "could" be, but all I know is none of them check out. I'm guessing it could be a problem with the fuel pump/filter or in that area since it just dies without warning. I'm getting tired of sitting on the side of the road for hours just waiting to get home from work! Please help!! Also if you live in the DFW area, and know what's wrong I'll pay you to fix it! lol :o)

When it doesn't start you have to check if fuel and spark is present.

Check this and report back.

I had a similar problem with an 86 Civic with a 1.5L engine. Drove me nuts. Just like you described, it would take 20 minutes to 2 hrs to start again. It had gas and spark. I ended up concluding it was something wrong with the carb. I took a chance in getting a carb from Pick-N-Pull (self serve junk yard), however, it worked and solved the problem. It hasn't happened now for 4yrs.
