Hi, my scheduled maintenance light is on and my husband says the dealer is trying to over sell us. The car has 201 th miles and they say it needs: timing belt replaced (he does not argue this one), tensioner (won't' know til they look at belt) spark plugs at 240.00, valve adjustment 489.00. Is all this necessary or are they taking advantage of me can I reset the light myself?

Hi anatude,

For scheduled maintenance as per 105 k miles the timing belt should be replaced and the tensioner would be recommended to be replaced as well. Spark plugs would depend on condition. If it had been replaced previously, then you might not need to replace them now if the mileage on them are still low. The valve clearances are recommended to be adjusted ONLY if they are noisy. Here is how you can reset the oil light in the diagrams below. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find.

How do I reset the "Maintenance Required" light on this model? The oil and filter were recently changed by the dealer, before the light came on. I suspect the light is based on mileage and oil change interval.

Which "SELECT/RESET" button are you talking about? Is that the "trip odometer" button?

It is a reminder light that I think comes on every 10,000 miles. It is a reminder for you that some service according to the manual is probably needed. In your owners manual it tells you how to reset the thing. If you took it in for service they would reset it for you. On older vehicles (not that much older) you hold the trip odometer reset button and turn on the key while holding the button until the light goes off.

You can disconect the battery and it will be reset but it will come back on until you repair what has tripped the light in the first place.

Most good auto parts stores and repair shops can plug in a hand held computer to your car and get a reading on what is wrong that made the light come on for no charge. Now you know what needs to be fixed! :)

The 'Maintenance Required' light in this car is an oil change reminder light. Check your operators manual for instructions on how to reset it. The 'Check Engine' light would indicate an operational malfunction.

Depending on your model it may be different. When in doubt, check your owners manual.

However, with the key off, hold the reset button, turn the key on to RUNII, hold the reset button until the light shuts off. Start the vehicle,.

2001 Honda Accord Manual

I got this 2001 honda accord VP 6 months ago form another person and mileage is 99k. Today morning suddenly maintenance required light was flashing for few seconds and went off. Is there any serious problem with my car? I appreciate the suggestions.

Shanti,

No, there is no problem with your car. You need to follow the suggested maintenance schedule for your vehicle. See your owners manual or your Honda dealer. You do have a big service coming up. The 105k service. Your car will get a new timing belt, water pump, spark plugs and more. Always change your engine oil every 4 to 5k miles. Rotate tires every other oil change depending on how they are wearing. The light you should be concerned about is your "check engine " light. See a good Honda mechanic if this light should come on. If your check engine light "flashes" while your driving at any time, do not drive the vehicle. The flashing means if you continue driving vehicle you could damage the Catalytic convertor. Hope this helps ease your mind.

just the other morning when i was going about an interview i looked at the gauges on my car and realized that my maintenance required light was on i kept an eye on all the other gauges to make sure that nothing was running hot and went home after i was done. my dad owns his own auto shop and put his dignostic tool on it and couldn't find any codes showing what was wrong. he said it may be like a oil change light so i tried pumping the gas but that didn't work. just wandered if anyone has encountered this problem and had any suggestions.

Hello,

If you have your owners manual you can look through it and find section for the light. It is possible that it is just time for an oil change or some other type of maintenance.

When was you last oil change, last tune up, air filter change, tranny service?

Also, when you turn the key to the on position were the dash lights come on is there an Service Engine Soon, or a Check Engine.

Need a lot more details but it sounds like there might be a charging system problem. Have the generator load-tested with a tester that measures "ripple". If ripple is high, you will also find the most output you can get is one third of the generator's rated capacity. That isn't enough to run the fuel pump, ignition system, and all of the computers. Computers are very sensitive to low or unstable system voltage and will do weird things.

I've seen something similar in my car and it took a while to diagnose and isolate but there are 2 small accessory relays on the passenger side fuse box that can eventually go bad and wreak havoc on the instrument cluster lights and sometimes the radio.

The relays are unforuntately on the back side of the fuse panel so you have to remove the glove compartment and use bent needle nose pliers to be able to reach and pull them out. One relay is always latched when iginition is on and it sometimes it unlatches intermittently based on humidity or car pitching forward or backward (acceleration ,etc)

The maintenance required light is just an oil change reminder. To reset it, with the key off hold in the trip reset button on the dash while turning the key on. Continue to hold button down until light flashes and then it's reset. The temperature sounds normal. They always run hotter at idle because the fan is programmed to come on at a higher temp than the thermostat. Make sure it is still full of coolant though.

OK, you need to get it to a shop ASAP and have it pressure tested to find the leak and repair it. The manufacturer recommends only using Honda coolant but there are some excellent universal coolants available . It's not real important now because they are likely going to have to drain it and refill to repair whatever is leaking.

I wouldn't take that chance. You have no idea what is leaking or whether it could suddenly get much worse. It only takes seconds of too much heat to destroy the engine. I would park it until it's repaired.

Hi,

If it is the reset for service (oil change). Do the following:

1) With the key on, press and hold the trip odometer reset button and turn the key off. See pic 1 for location.

2) While still holding the reset button, turn the key on.

3) Hold the button for approximately 10 seconds until you see the maintenance required light begin to flash.

4) Continue holding the button until the maintenance required light turns off.

5) Turn the key off and it should be reset.

Let us know if this helps.

Take care,
Joe
