Cruise Control Not working

Nine times out of ten its the clock spring behind the steering wheel shorting out but to be sure here is the cruise control wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works and a guide to help you test the connections.

To perform a simple test, when problem occurs and you are not able to set the cruise control, use your left foot to lift the brake pedal and if it works, the brake switch is out of adjustment. They call the clock spring the cable unit FYI.

Thanks for this post I used the guide and wiring diagrams to confirm it was the clock spring cost me $143.00 for anew one works great! I love this site.

Cruise Control went out. The light for it won't stay lit when I try to engage it. I checked the fuses, but couldn't find a fuse that seemed to be just for Cruise control. Everything else in the car seems to work normally.
As a side note, I had a mechanic do the 36,000 mile maintenance, but he didn't know how to shut off the "check engine" light.
At the same time that the Cruise went out, the "check engine light went out, too.
Again, everything on the car seems to be working normally except for the cruise control.

Oil has been changed, now is time to change mechanic as well.

When Check engine light shows, an error has been detected by the engine management system and you need a scan to find out what is wrong.

The cruise control not working could be related to the CEL so get a scan done and come bak with the exact error code. If you are located in the US, you can get it done free at your local Autozone outlet , if any.

Exactly where is the VSS wire and the Tach wire ?

I am in the process of installing an after market cruise control, and the last two wires need to be connected to the connections mentioned above.

A small pictorial representation would be greatly appreciated if at all possible.

The vehicle speed sensor is located on top of the transaxle. If the vehicle is equipped with a tachometer, then it will be ran by the speed sensor as well. Diagram of wires from the speed sensor is below. I have highlighted the appropriate wires for your convenience. NOTE: The blue wire continues on to the PCM off screen.

I apologise for not mentioning before, the wires are supposed to be:
1 - VSS = Blue/White
2 - Tach = Yellow/Green

Some more info I found:
Where is/could be
1 - *location 4-31 @ ECM ?
2 - *Location 16 on distributor ?

Could they be somewhere on that box that is on top of the *middle tunnel*,
on the right side (passenger side) ?
The wires to be connected are inside the cabin.

My apologies. I have found and posted the VSS wire for you located inside of cab. It is located under the middle of the dash at the PCM. The tachometer signal wire (yellow/green) will be located behind the instrument cluster or in left hand side of steering column. When hooking up a cruise control system, the tach is usually not required for the cruise control to work, it is just a safety feature. If the engine RPM's reach a certain rate (usually at or above 4000) the cruise control will disengage preventing any possible harm to the engine.

Problem seems to be a faulty brake switch. It is not sensing and disabling the cruise control when brakes are applied.

the cruise control does not engage and work normally

if the cruise control will engage, the engine will downshift, even at 60 mph.

the transmission was rebuilt oct 2007.

I cannot say if the cruise control started acting up after the trans work, or not.

is the trans on the cruise control circuit

how can I test to see if the cruise control inputs are working correctly

Hi Bill,

Actually the cruise control requires the trans to provide signals to work and if the trans is bogging down, it could be a trans problem.

Do you have any gear shifting issues under normal driving conditions?

Is the speedometer working correctly?

I have a similar problem on a 2001 Accord EX V6. When the cruise is engaged, the vehicle slows about 10 mph before picking up the speed to where is was originally set. Sometimes it revs as well. Otherwise the tranny seems fine. Any ideas?

Probably because the bulb is burned out. You'll need a meter or test light to see if the bulb is getting power. You'll also have to pull the dash panel module out to get at it. Unfortunately my reference doesn't give me that detail.

How do i use auto cruse

After startng engine, turn the cruise control master switch ON.
When driving at the desired speed, press the set button. Cruise should work when dash indicator lights up.
When brakes and/or clutch pedal is depressed, the cruise control would cut. Shifting to N for Automatic transmission would occur same.

If vehicle is not stopped, pressing the Resume button would reset the cruise whereby the vehicle would self accelerate up to speed if it is lower than the set speed.

Turning the ignition switch off would turn the master switch off as well.

Cruise Control does not activate(kick-in) when pushing button. On light does not come on when pushing button.

The most likely suspect is a broken clock spring. That's a wound-up ribbon cable in a plastic housing under the steering wheel. As it continues to break, the horn will also stop working and the Air Bag light will turn on.

My car Accord 2007 cruise control not working. The cruise control does not work and the slide has been changed inside the steering wheel, but the cruise control is disconnected and reinstalled again.

If your clock spring has been changed then we need to find a little more detail out about what your cruise is doing. When you press the buttons, do any of the lights come on that show the cruise is on? Does it just not engage the cruise?

Basically we need to know if you are getting voltage from the buttons to the gauge control module. The way this works, is the buttons tell this module that you have pressed the button and it then sends the correct signal to the throttle control actuator.

We are going to have to track voltage through the system and find out where we are losing it.

The issue is you are not going to be able to track voltage from the gauge module to the throttle module as that is what is called a bus network and it sends coded messages to tell it what to do. Here is a guide that talks about this:

Let us know if you have voltage at the gauge module on the circuits highlighted below and we can go from there. Or if the cruise indicator is working then we can make an assumption at this point that this is working.
