Whencar is placed in reverse, a loud whistling sound emanates, it seems from rear. When placed in Drive, sound disappears

This is most likely transmission related. Have a transmission shop take a look at the vehicle right away. In the meantime, you may want to check your transmission fluid level to make sure it is safe to drive.
