I have a 2001 honda accord. I am having trouble with going over 60 mph it shakes and the speed drops down to 5 to 15 mph. Took it to 2 technicians and they said it was the catalictic convertiable stopped up. Cause the car has a muffler and when we gave it gas, there was hardly no air flow and the muffler was very hot and shouldn't be. Well we took the catalict convertiable off and cleaned it. well going down the interstate again doing over 60 the did it again. Once it does it, if you let it sit and cool off, it will go fine again. Please advise of what you think this could be.

Hi Angelacraig,

How was the Cat converter cleaned?

If it is clogged, it would affect the performance.

If it is operating red hot, then you have a misfiring from the engine that is dumping fuel inot the exhaust resulting in the cat converter running red hot.

If engine runs well during cold or short distance driving, the ignition coil could be bad.

Thanks for that information. Have another question...We got some codes for what it could be as well. It states, Catalyst Efficiency Below
Threshold (P0420)
1361, 1362


Can you please advise of what these codes may be or mean.

P0420 = a likely bad catalytic converter.

P1361 and P1362 = a fault with the distributor or PCM.

Either the PCM needs updating or it is bad causing a limiter on the engine at 3000 rpm.

I failed to mention that it does good driving around town and all everyday. This only takes place when driving on the interstate and going 60 plus mph. And it don't do it right off. It's like 10 or 15 after up to that speed. Then it gradually goes down to about 20 mph. Then we cut it off and let it sit for about 10 to 15 min and it does good. Then go about a few minutes more up the interstate, it will do it again.

The trouble codes indicates a possible PCM fault and that can cause the symptoms described.

Check with your dealer to see if any updates are available for the PCM.
