1999 Accord front end noise

1999 Accord EX. 130,000 miles, 5 spd manual trans.

Lately a noise has been coming from my drive train. It is sort of a "wum wum wum wum wum" low-pitched sound that occurs only (and always) when moving and increases with speed.

It is not a tire problem. I have rotated and inspected the tires with no results. Also, there is nothing being transmitted to either the steering wheel or brake pedal.

I have also removed the steering knuckle to inspect the wheel bearing hub. The hub turns smoothly and there is no play in it. However, I don't know if this is an effective test for a wheel bearing problem.

I did notice that the driver side CV half-shaft inserts into a bushing mounted about halfway between the wheel hub and the transfer case. I did not inspect this bushing but wonder if it could be the culprit?

Any clicking when the wheels are turned all the way (u-turn) ? That is an indicator of a cv going bad

Nope...no clicking while turning. I know that clicking will occur if a cv is bad, especially while accellerating into a turn from a stop. The noise I am experiencing is happening while travelling straight...even if coasting.

When the car is stationary and you accelerate, is the noise there? Is there any particular speed that makes it worse or does it occur all of the time? Have you checked the belts visually running and not running for any movements that are not normal such as a loose harmonic balancer, etc?

When the car is stationary there is no noise other than the engine running...which sounds good. Revving the engine does not produce the noise. Belts, tensioners, balancer all look fine.

The noise is only present when the car is moving and the cadence of the noise increases with the speed of the car. Also, if I push in the clutch pedal and let the car coast, the noise is not affected...it continues.

Have you hit anything, anything at all, even lightly? I would ask you to check the shields on the disc brakes. Look at them from behind the tire and see if it is possible that one of the is bent in to the wheel and rubs. They can make many different sounds.
