It now takes increased pressure on the brake pedal to stop our car. We have had the brakes and brake pads inspected and they are fine. We would like to know whether there is a way that a mechanic can adjust the brake pedal so that it will stop the car more quickly with less pressure applied to the pedal.

Hi cschulkin,

When brake pedal requires additional pressure to stop the vehicle, there are 3 most likely possibilities.

1. Inferior brake pads quality. The pads would have to be replaced to rectify.

2. Stuck/seized brake caliper slider bolts. Brake caliper would have to be tested by removing the bolts.

3. Leaking vacumn booster. When vacumn leaks, the booster receives less assist and would require additional force to stop the vehicle. This phenomenon is usually associated with engine surging when brakes are applied. Check the seal between the master cylinder and booster for leakages.
