The windshield wipers only work if i hold the lever down (lever goes up or down for manual wiper movement and gets turned forward and backwards for intermittent setting). The intermittent setting does not work anymore. How do i fix it? please help driving in the rain gets extremely annoying. thanks

If you have to hold the lever in a particular position to make it work, Im thinking the multi-function switch (wiper/turn signal) needs replacing.

Replacing components without testing and confirming them to be bad is a costly and time wasting job. You should perform test first to locate the source of the problem.

WIPERS DO NOT OPERATE IN ANY POSITION
Blown fuse No. 6 (30 A) in dash fuse block.
Faulty wiper motor assembly.
Disconnected wiper linkage.
Faulty wiper switch.
Poor ground.
Check for open circuit in Green/Black wire.
Check for loose or disconnected terminals.

© 2008 Mitchell Repair Information Co., LLC.

From the schematic, ground the Blu wire to test if the motor works in the low speed position.

Grounding the Blue wire should get the wiper running in high speed mode.

Perform above with wires connected and back probing the connectors concerned.

System is linked to Integrated Control Unit plugged into fuse panel at left kick panel.

only performed tests on the motor and the switch, but does the wiper have a relay that is under the fuse box on a 1990 Accord model? i was on a Honda forum and someone told me to replaced a relay under the fuse box and it fixed his wiper problems.

There is an intermittent relay under the fuse box. If the relay is faulty, the wiper would not park itself.

To access the relay, remove the bolts holding the underhood fuse box and lift it up. You would see the relay bolted onto the lower part of the fuse box.

The relay is only for intermittent operations. If low and high speed mode is not functioning, the likely cause would be the integrated control unit, plugged into the underdash fuse box. At wiper switch, ground the blue wire (low speed) and blue/yellow high).

Ground the black wire and turn wiper switch on to test if wiper works according to the speeds. If yes, either the integrated control unit is bad or there is an open in black wire between switch and integrated control unit.

Four cylinder two wheel drive automatic 227,000 miles

I was driving home from school yesterday and there was heavy rain in the area. The windshield wipers worked for about fifteen minutes and then it just stopped. It was a very hard drive home. Does anyone know what is wrong with my windshield wipers?

Check the fuse for it. If not, check to see if the wiper motor has the proper signal/power/ground going to it.

front wheel drive manual 160,000 miles

My windshield wipers stopped working entirely the other day. One evening they were working. The next morning I cleaned the snow off my windshield, got in and tried turning on my wipers. They went to the full up position, then just stopped. I had to move them back down manually, and now they won't turn on at all. According to the fuse map, the washer fluid is on the same fuse, and that is still working. That fuse has also been checked, and it is okay. Any idea what might be wrong?

Hi there,

If you were able to move the wipers down by hand easily, you will have a broken wiper linkage or regulator drive linkage. Turn wipers on, can you hear the motor working? if so check regulator if no motor it may of been overloaded with the snow and failed.

Four cylinder front wheel drive automatic 95,000 miles

Wipers only move when going from low to high for just a second. With several clicks going back and forth can get back to starting position. In pulling the lever (arm) down for quick wipe, works fine.

Therefore does not work when set on intermittent, low or high. Only when holding the arm down.

Hi sgwood,

The wiper intermittent relay seems faulty or disconnected. Check the relay located under the main fusebox underhood near the firewall.

Manual transmission 180,000 miles

First the bell when you leave your lights on stopped working. Then the intermittent windshield wiper setting stopped working, though the others are fine. The lighter quit working too. I checked the fuses and they are fine. What else can I check? I am afraid everything else will slowly quit too.

All those circuits may share a common grounding point. it may be loose or dirty. Many Hondas have a sort of "intermediate control module" which in many cases consolidates multiple functions. I can recall one Honda where the headlight warning chime and the seat belt warning chime failed not long after one another. The fix was this particular module being replaced. I would have to see a wiring diagram to see if the connection to the intermittent wipers is possible. my gut feeling says it may be. Generally, it is found behind the plastic kick panel on either passenger or driver side.

Hope this helps some.

Hi ginfizz,

Extech is correct, there is an integrated control unit plugged into the the main fuse box at driver side under dash.

But check the intermittent wiper relay first, it is located under the fuse box under hood. Check the wire sockets under the fuse box, sometimes they tend to have corroded or contaminated connections.

Six cylinder front wheel drive automatic 96,000 miles

The front window wiper stopped today as I was driving in the rain. I seldom use it as we do not have much rain in California's central valley.

I open the hood and saw something blinking under the wiper area. I guess it may be a fuse needs to be replaced.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Four cylinder automatic

My passenger side windshield wiper stopped working, but my drivers side still works.
What might be wrong with it? Do I need a new motor or do both wipers run off of the same motor? It is really strange. The windshield was clear when I turned them on.

They run off the same motor.

One of the linkages may of rotted or broken off. Remove the wiper cover and have a look.

Six cylinder automatic

My windshield wipers stopped working so my boyfriend checked the fuses under the hood. he said he did not see one for windshield wipers, but took some of them out to check to see if they were blown. After this I went to get in my car and now it will not start. Everything comes on the way it should, it started for a second then the car started rumbling and the engine shut off. Now it just tries to turn over but does not actually start. Is it possible to mess something up by looking at the fuses?

He needs to retrace his steps and check if they are properly seated again. I think the wiper fuse is in the cabin of the vehicle.

Just recently the windshield wipers stopped working. I looked but did not see a fuse for it. Is it along with the other fuses (lights, locks, etc.) or is it at its own separate location? Could it be the switch in the car? And if it is not the fuse, how much would the motor replacement approximately cost?

Start with the fuse. There are a couple of locations for the fuse boxes. Your car should have one down by the driver feet and under the hood up by the passenger firewall.

Hi bfelton,

If you are able to perform diagnostics and mechanically inclined, this job should not be too much of a hassle.

Did you check the wiper fuse?

I am looking at purchasing this car, but the guy says the windshield wipers do not work and it needs a motor. I was just wondering if anyone on here could tell me if there could be anything else that would cause the wipers to stop working? or worst case scenario approximately how much money i would be looking at spending on parts?

Thanks for your help,

The wiper motor is pretty much the most expensive thing to change if the wipers do not work. Some other possibilities would be a faulty wiper switch, or broken linkage.

Six cylinder front wheel drive automatic 165,000 miles

Hi, my question is about my windshield wipers. One day they just stopped working and today i just changed out my battery by Wal-mart. Well i thought the reason my wipers were not working was because my battery was messed up, but once i changed my battery they still are not working. so i am wondering if it is because a fuse is messed up with the wipers or what it could be?

Thanks,
Samantha

It could be serveral things, including a fuse. Among the most probable causes I can think of would be the wiper relay, wiper motor or wiper transmission. Any and all of those things can and do cause the wipers to not work.

More than likely the ball socket became disconnected when you moved it. It is not hard to do on an older car with high mileage.
The wiper cowl will need to be removed and replaced. Then the ball and socket can be reconnected, using new ball cups would not hurt, and put back together. The reason the drivers' side affects both wipers is because the motor has an arm that goes to the drivers side wiper and it pushes both wipers. The wipers are connected to each other by the same rod with ball and socket joints. As the motor pushes the rod it is hitting the wiper arm under the cowl and moving it around.
I hope this helps.

Four cylinder front wheel drive automatic 10,000 miles

a few month ago the windshield wipers stopped working as designed. When I turn the switch to "Int" , the wiper won't work as "int", instead, it continues to wipe the glass just like the switch is on the " Lo" position. A few minutes later, it will stop and rest on the park position. If I turn it off from any switch position, the wiper will still work as if the switch is on the "LO" position and will stop and rest on park position a few minutes later. If I started the washer pump, the fluid will be pumped correctly, but the same problem to the wiper will happen. I am wondering if I should go ahead to replace the wiper motor.
