1993 Honda Accord Combination of problems...

i have a 1993 honda accord 10th anniversary edition, automatic transmission. List of problems:

-- RPM dropping too low and cutting off sometimes
-- Cruise Control not working
-- Shifting through gears rough sometimes
-- Burning a lot of gas
-- Speedometer & rpm needle losing power for a split second when i take my foot off the gas pedal, they drop down and immediately come back up

also, the alternator is not charging properly, even though its new. will change it out and wire carrying charge to battery.

not sure if the charging problem is connected to the other problems, but Honda said it could be a bad speed sensor, and that ther's only one speed sensor on my car...

Hi shiva.moonian,

The rpm dropping too low is most likely due to the idle control system not working correctly. Cleaning the throttle body and Idle Control Valve and readjusting the idling speed should solve the problem.

As to burning a lot of gas, this could be due to the engine tune up or could be related to the others.

All the other problems are possibly related and the main cause could be a faulty VSS.

the car got a tune up in the past six months: plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor, pcv valve, O2 sensor, so i dont think its that.

i adjusted the idle speed to idle a little higher, and it seemed to be running ok for a little bit, but then the idle dropped back really low and its doing the same thing again.

Does it have a sensor on the idle control valve? Can this be the problem??

The IAC does not have any sensors. It has a valve that is regulated electrically and has coolant passages within it.

If the throttle body and IAC are dirty, it would restrict the amount of air going into the intake manifold during idling. This would reduce the idling speed.

Get them cleaned and readjust the idling speed.

I would recommend a valve clearance check/adjustment if the idling speed is erratic after the idling speed is set correctly.
