My car started having this problem about a month ago:
While I was driving, both ABS and e-brake light came on. I pulled over to check the fluid, master cylinder was low, ABS reservoir was overflowing.. I drove it to a garage and just when I was pulling in, there was so much back-pressure that the pedal would not go down. I left it there for the weekend and got a call on Monday, they told me that it needs a new ABS pump. Instead of paying the $500 for that, I just disconnected the ABS. (I just bought this car a week before this happened). Again, about 3 days later, I was driving and all of a sudden there was drag, and it felt like the brakes were on- even when I let off the gas and the car came to a complete stop, while in drive. I disconnected the battery, took all the fuses and the relay out, and the car was fine for another 3 days. Again I was on the side of the road, couldn’t move, couldn’t even push it if I wanted to. A few hours later someone came to pick it up, and it was fine. They couldn’t find anything wrong with it, except the ABS fluid level was over max, so he removed some of it. It drove fine for another 2 days and this morning it happened again. I checked the wheels, the back ones were warm, the front ones were burning hot. This time, the guy came out 10 minutes later and told me the car was just fine, the brakes were fine. Fluid levels were good; he did not know what to tell me. Everything electrically for the ABS is disconnected- and this happens every few days, not constantly. I am stumped, and every time I try to get it fixed, its perfectly fine!! I was told maybe I need a new proportioning valve..? Please help! The only other piece of information that might be helpful is before I bought the car, they replaced the front cross-member/spindle and a few other things, previously someone hit a curb and messed things up.

Hi CNJUSTMA,

The ABS master pump is faulty and leaking internally ting in fluid fomr the brake master cylinder getting to the ABS side thus overflowing.

This somes times results in the brake fluid not returning and causing back pressure which locks up the brakes. After cooling down the system becomes ok.

There is no Proportioning Control Valve, it is inside the ABS pump circuuit.

Either you replace the ABS Pump or discard it and replace with a PCV and forget about ABS.
