Engine Cooling problem
1988 Honda Accord 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 200k miles

Is it necessary to remove the fuel rail/injector, intake manifold, etc to replace the water pipe which connects the water pump to the radiator hose or is the another way?

I do not have a service manual infront of me, unforunately, however I do believe you can access the water pipe from beneath the vehicle without having to remove the intake manifold.

I've removed it from the bottom on later gen. honda's, I am just not 100% sure on 88 accords.

Thanks for the information. Not an easy job for sure! Which do you recommend in through the underside or the top? I do have access to my neighbor’s shop with pneumatic auto lift. I guess the underneath would be better. What is your advice?

Definitely do it from underneath the vehicle. First You might have to remove the oil filter and possibly the crankcase charcoal canister if it is in the way (the black box). After those are removed you should have enough room to operate!

Thanks for the tips. With regards to the end of the pipe going into the water pump; is it simply a matter of carefully installing the O ring, and no need to remove the pump? Thanks for your time and advice, parts should be here tomorrow.

There should not be a reason to remove the water pump, you are correct.

Got-r-done. What a job! That breather chamber (crankcase charcoal canister) off of the oil pan up under the intake was the worst part. Nonetheless, no leaks! The old pipe was rusted out in two spots on the outlets; shot. On the 88 it's remove the following: very large engine support bracket, manifold bracket, oil filter, breather chamber cover, tubing and chamber. The right side bolts on the breather chamber assembly are very hard to reach and the one bolt holding the water pipe is difficult. Best part; no busted knuckles. Thanks for all your information, I really appreciate it as it helped greatly.
