When I start my car, the engine tends to run very high for the first 5 minutes in the winter and about 3 minutes in the summer until the engine warms up. I change the oil every 3k miles and has a little rust but still runs smoothly once the engine warms up. My mechanic says it is the carburetor which is dirty. He says even if he tries to clean it doesn't mean the engine still won't run high so it's not worth spending $1,000 to clean it. He says Honda doesn't have 22 yo carburetors in stock. He says the only thing I could do is to use the fuel cleaner each time I fuel up and the carb choke cleaner with the engine running. I use only high octane gas because if I use regular or anything else the car tends to have engine knock a lot. I run the air-condition which tends to lower the idle but still higher than normal. Is there anything else I can do? Or is there some other problem?

Hi icchoice,

Thank you for the donation.

Engine is designed to run at higher idling when starting from cold and what you described is normal. The autochoke is set to increase the idling speed to prevent stalling when starting from cold.

What is the problem that you are facing?

Will it ruin the engine if it runs higher than 2 to 3 rpm for several minutes? When it runs so high, it feels like it's going to explode. Sometimes, I also smell a little smoke. I've brought it to my mechanic who specializes in Hondas and Accuras who says it's fine. He says it can go for another 100k miles easily.

Running at more than 2,000 rpm would be a tad higher than necessary. Though it would not ruin the engine but it is not necessary to have it running that high. A rpm range of 1800 at startup would be nice.

The autochoke can be adjusted to to reduce the start up rpm so you can ask your mechanic to lower it slightly so that the rpm doen not run so high at cold start up.
