Generally when shifting from 1 t 2nd the RPMs run up to 5-6k and then it shifts into gear hard but without any grinding or slamming noises. When I got the car in Dec. 07 it reved up around 3-4k once in a while, and now it has times when it doesn't want to shift at all. Is it too late to do a fluid and filter change on the car ??? And is this something we can do at home like with the directions I looked at under transmission repair ??? Or is ther perhaps another problem that can be repaired ??? This car is old and rusty but the motor is strong and gas milage is great. Would like to be able to save it without throwing good money after bad. Please let me know asap

Well I would have recommended doing a fluid and filter change as soon as it slipped the first time. unfortunatly sometimes the problems get worse if you have let the problem go for to long (few thousand miles) because parts get worn out inside the transmission. The fluid and filter change is somthing you can do yourself as long as you have a way to get the car high enough to get a oil pan under the transmission. It will be messy. A set of ramps may be a good investment. If after the fluid and filter change the problem isn't gone the next step is to a transmission shop for more expensive maintenance
