Hello,

My friend has an '80 Honda Accord that started squealing quite bad after we changed the front pads. I don't know anything about the pads that were purchased but assume they are fairly low quality. I have changed break pads for years and have never had this problem.

I recently pulled off one of the front tires and found the brake disk much hotter than I would have expected. My friend had been driving around a bit before I took off the tire and I don't know if he uses his breaks a lot when driving. I felt that the break disk was not turning as well as it should have been and am wondering if there is some pressure from the master cylinder that is causing the front breaks to be in a perpetual state of partial activation which would possibly explain the hot disk. Both front breaks are squealing bad so I don't think its necessarily the individual brake cylinders.

Somebody told my friend that there is a "brake squealer" that needs to be filed down. I have no clue what he meant by that and if it is accurate information.

I would appreciate any advice that you may have.

Hi MinisterMedic,

If the brakes are binding, the wheel would be hot.
Check the caliper pistons and slider bolts are not seized.

Low quality brake pads can result in squealing noises and some running in might solve the problem. If the problem does not go away then the pads have to be replaced with better quality ones.

If the rotors are uneven, the brakes would squeal as well.
