High idle

If those miles are correct it could be lots of things. So it only idles high in gear not in park?

Actually no, it idles high in park [around 2000] when i put it in gear it sputters and shuts off. it all started last week with a high idle in park. it would drive fine on the freeway then it would idle erratically at a stop, i would put it in neutral to keep it running. around town driving i would usually keep it in third gear or else it would sputter along. now it shuts off when i put it in gear. i changed the temperature sensor and IAC valve. any thoughts?

oh yea, it is throwing a code po712.

So all your getting is a p0712 code? That is for the transmission temperature sensor being bad or the wires to it being shorted somewhere. When you replaced the temperature sensor what was the part number of the new one? Also, you for sure have a twin cam engine? Have you checked the vacuum hoses for vacuum leaks?

for sure a twin cam not sure about the part number at one point it threw a p1623.

I have never seen the p1623 that is to do with the transmission temp sensor input as well.Pull the egr valve off flip it over.Then push the plunger with the star shape in it all the way down see if it sticks down?The egr valves can stick and cause vacuum leaks and stalling.Also with the egr valve off start it for two seconds.The rpms should race up and a large exhaust leak should be heard.

so i took off the egr valve and i pushed the plunger all the way in and it stuck i didnt try to start it with it off but after i put it back together i started it and it threw new codes po712 and po714. oh yea, it starts right up,runs like crap and dies when i put it in gear

Did you close the egr valve before you put it back on

Sounds like you need a new egr valve if it's sticking like that will cause issues with how it runs.Also the transmission temp sensor is right by the transmission filter under the air filter.Someone might have messed up the wires to it when they changed the transmission filter.Those 700 codes are for the transmission temp sensor curcuit.Have you checked for vacuum leaks hoses etc?Sure wish I knew the part number of the coolant temp sensor you put in.I have seen people put the wrong one in and cause issues that way.

if the part number is on my receipt it would be #2-9386 vacuum lines appear to be intact

also the egr valve plunger seemed to stick when i pushed in on it as well as sticking open.what are your thoughts on maybe the torque converter?

What brand part is the coolant temp sensor?the torque converters don't fail often on those but that wouldn't explain the running bad out of gear.it needs a egr valve if it's sticking like that.I have tried cleaning them but haven't had much luck doing that.They have gotten a lot cheaper.

out of couriosity i went to my local parts stores website and searched by part no. typed in 2-9386 and up comes the part i just purchesed "ignition temperature sensor" looks almost identical to the coolant temp sensor could this possibly be an issue? im on my way to get it exchanged also going to replace trans temp sensor ill keep you posted. and yes i will check part no. before i install

Yes that could defiantly be a issue I would also inspect the wiring to the transmission temp sensor because the transmission temp sensor has a extremely low failure rate.Like I have rarely ever changed one in the over 16yrs I worked for saturn.

i was looking into a trans temp sensor and they seem to all look like the coolant temp sensor. i took mine out and compared it to the one at my local parts store and it was de smaller but they insisted it was the right one. how could this be?

The coolant temp sensor transmission temp sensor and ambient temperature sensor are all the same sensor.

That is really good know to know-thanks. So I have my egr valve off and tried to clean it a little and it seems to not seem to ok be sticking any more,should I try it or should I get a new one? By the way,after closer inspection,I seen that the wires comming out of the temp sensor are freyed and looks like they might be touching probably should replace it?

The wires to your transmission temp sensor?I would just get a new connector with the wires and splice it in.You can try cleaning the age valve if that doesn't work then get a new one.

SO I REPLACED THE TRAN TEMP SENSOR /WIRES NOW IT STARTS RIGHT UP, IDLES JUST FINE BUT DIES WHEN I PUT IT IN GEAR. FLASHING A NEW CODE PO300 ANY THOUGHTS?

How are the plugs and wires?I would only use copper spark plugs and recommend using ngk stock plugs and good quality wires.like a.c. Delco or denso wires.

Would be ad plygs cause it to die when I put in gear ?

Bad plugs can cause all kinds of problems plus depending on what's causing the missing so bad that the check engine light flashes
