It is giving a code p0420 and I need to know what it could really be for. sure I am a single parent and do not have lot money, but I got to get tags on the car and I do not know what to change for sure.

P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Most commonly this is due to a failed catalytic converter.

Is that the same as the o2 part? And would that be the first part I fix to get my check light off? And is it real expensive to get that other part fixed ?

No unfortunately, the catalytic converter is more expensive but and you can find one Amazon.
