Heater is getting stuck in defrost position

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

The component which controls air flow directions is called a mode door. The door is operated by an electric actuator. Based on your description, it sounds like the motor may be going bad and not operating properly in extreme conditions.

The actuator is located under the dash on the HVAC box. I attached a picture which shows its location.

What I suggest is to check the operation of that motor under the extreme conditions. If you find it needs replaced, here are the directions:

Mode Control Motor Replacement

1. Remove the glove box.
2. Remove the wire harness clips (A), the self-tapping screws, and the passenger's heater duct (6).

3. Disconnect the 7P connector (A) from the mode control motor (B). Remove the self-tapping screws and the mode control motor from the heater unit.

4. Install the motor in the reverse order of removal. Make sure the pin on the motor is properly engaged with the linkage. After installation, make sure the motor runs smoothly.
