Gear selector stuck to left side and transmission stays in second gear

I was driving yesterday when I tried to shift to third and realized the shifter wouldn't go any more to the right than the first and second gear I pulled over, and when I tried to start again, from where first gear usually is I found I was still in 2nd. limped it home took apart the console and found the cable that responds to moving the shifter from left and right wouldn't give anymore cable. that's where I left it. any advice would be helpful.
