My harmonic balancer was replaced, a known issue in early model C6. The wobble is still present with a new harmonic balancer. Belts are not chirping, yet. What are possible causes?

Good morning,

Possible issues

1. improper installation of the balancer. if the proper tool was not used and someone used a hammer and a piece of wood, it will damage the balancer.

2. crankshaft not running true. this could be an internal issue with the crank.

3. balancer not tight or torqued correctly.

Was this a new, re-manufactured or used balancer?

The repair was performed at a GM dealership so I'm assuming it was OEM part. I doubt they would upgrade the balancer and I figured they wouldn't install an aftermarket part if I purchased and provided. I would assume the certified technicians removed the steering rack and used proper tools (puller and not hammer) being it's a big dealership. That doesn't mean they torqued it correctly though. My concern is internal issues, such as the crankshaft not running true, as you stated. I have 1K miles and one month of dealership provided warranty left on the vehicle and I've been driving hard trying to get belt chirp again. The Service Manager said "bring it back if the belts start chirping again." I think it's more than the balancer since that's new and installed by certified technicians, but I am concerned that when I asked if the front end was aligned after pulling the steering rack the Service Manager said "I believe so." Thank you very much for your answers. This information makes me feel better prepared to approach the dealership with additional questions before my warranty expires. Have a great day!

You are welcome.

Get this documented from them with it being a continuing issue that was present before the warranty expires. that way you will still be covered.

Did you provide the part?

Thank you for that advice. I have an appointment at a different dealer for a window regulator replacement. I will have them diagnose as well, and put in writing. I didn't provide the part, the dealership did.

Thank you Roy, I really appreciate all the information. I'm really worried about the possibility of a crankshaft issue or the balancer blowing out and taking out other components. Have a great weekend.

No problem Roy, and have a great Christmas and New Year. I will post back here when I get resolve, either from the dealership or my attorney. LOL
