Hard starting problem, starter clicks

Only when the engine is hot and sits for about an hour, when I turn the starter key, the starter clicks and may or may not turn the engine over. When cold, it starts right up. I have replaced the battery with a 1000 CCA unit and same problem. I have verified the alternator is working correctly. I get 14.1 volts when the engine is idle and 14.2 at 2,500 rpm. I checked the voltage at the battery with engine off and have 12.1 volts. I also checked during cranking and/or clicking and have a voltage of 11.3. Does this mean the starter is bad?

It does sound like the starter is bad. Here is a link that shows how to check a starter. If you have power where is shows and you only get a click, replace the starter.

So it was clicking away and not turning over the engine. I did the old screwdriver across the solenoid test and it cranked right over. Has to be some sort of electrical issue.

If it is clicking with the key, but it will start with jumping the solenoid, then my guess is you have a corrosion issue. First, disconnect the battery and then remove starter wires, clean, inspect, and make sure they in good condition.

If that does not help, I have to ask if you did the test listed above to check a starter. If you are getting 12 volts to the smaller wire on the starter when the key is in the start position and a good connection between the battery and the starter, my first guess would be the starter. However, it does not seem it is bad based on what you said, but rather, it sounds like a dirty or loose connection at the starter.
