Grinding as I brake hard and come to a stand still

Hello. Whilst driving, I stepped on the brakes to hear a sudden deep grinding. I was not sure what it was, maybe feels like slipped brake pads/discs, maybe? I can gently press on the brakes but anything more that gets me to a standstill, it is grinding on something and very concerned what it is. I have the car listed above 56 plate. I had the brake discs and pads changed in 2017.

Can you help?

Brand new and on down the line stuff can be defective or go defective.

Not saying you got a bad repair, but things can happen like a bolt broke off or worked its way out. A pad may have come off. Even stuff can be reassembled wrong. Time sometimes slips away and the brakes could be older than you recall and they just might be worn out

By your description it sounds like your rotors (or drums) are contacting bare metal (pads/shoes are eaten away).

Without a reference to your vehicle, I am guessing you have disc brakes all the way around. (vehicles with drum brake can also chew up unseen inside the drum)

After the brakes cool off.

If you or your pal is capable, crawl around your wheels (or take them off) with a flashlight. Look at both sides of each rotor (disc). They should be smooth, with maybe some slight wear lines. Dragging your finger over them they should be pretty smooth.

If you come across one or more that are really gouged out, deep circles, rough to the touch, you have found your problem!
