A short on the feed wire will not cause a bulb to burn out. It will cause a fuse to blow or a self-resetting circuit breaker will trip.
Two common causes of repeated bulb failure are water or moisture in the housing or a loose socket or housing. Water can splash onto the hot bulb. A loose socket will allow the bulb to vibrate excessively.
If the filaments are burning open, measure the voltage between the two battery terminals while the engine is running. It must be between 13.75 and 14.75 volts. If it is too high, besides boiling the water out of the battery, it will cause bulbs to burn out faster than normal.
The most common cause of repeated bulb failure is touching the bulb on the glass. There is a warning on the package to touch the bulb only by its plastic base. Oil from your fingerprints will burn through the glass when it gets hot.
