I recently had my cylinder head gaskets replaced and the mechanic told me to bring my truck back after 800 miles for re-torquing the cylinder heads. Is this required? I paid an astronomical amount of money to have the head gasket replaced and now I need to bring the vehicle back for another costly check and re-torque? Also, what is the average price for a cylinder head gasket replacement? I'm sure I got ripped off but living in Italy for the time being doesn't help.

Hi there,

These are called torque to yield bolts, they should never be re-tensioned, if they are touched, i will guarantee another blown head gasket, torque to yield bolts should only be used once, then discarded, as for cost this can vary depending on what head work was preformed, ask the repairer if they used torque to yield specs, as if they did not you do run the risk of further problems sooner rather than later.
