gas gauge does not work

If it doesn't work at all, it could be a number of things. However, if it does work but isn't accurate (i.e. will move around from full/empty and everyplace in between) call a mechanic. Working with a tank w/an undeterminable amount of fuel in it is not easy or safe if you don't know what you're doing. If it were me, I'd rather someone else deal with those hazards.
