2004 GMC Sierra Fuel mystery

So a few days ago while driving my truck, i suddenly lost almost all power while driving down the highway. The truck would sputter and act like it was dieing. I had 1/4 tank of gas, but it acted like it was running out. Anyways, I drove it like this back to a fuel tank and filled it up. It ran healthy as ever. Now, I am back down to 1/2 a tank and am hearing noises upon acceleration. Dad thinks it is an exhaust leak noise, but I suspect it being my fuel pump? Help please?

When the problem occurs, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Don't let gas spray all over a hot engine. Safety is your responsibility.

There is a service bulletin for the fuel gage reading. The gage shows a quarter tank, when your actually out of gas. Might be problem with sending unit? I wouldn't replace anything without being sure.

I ran in the poor condition ~4 miles back to my house. Would it run that long if it were almost out of gas? I figured it would just quit. Also, my service light came on. Upon using a code checker, it said that my fuel was lean during the poor running period. Thanks for the info btw.
