2003 GMC Sierra V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

my 2003 gmc sierra wont start. the gear indicator on the stearing column doesnt register what gear it is in there for the truck doesnt recognize what gear it is in so it wont turn over. could that be the reason my truck wont start and if so how do i fix it?

Inspect and test the park and neutral position switch on left side of transmission and also the starter relay could be very well be the starter itself-Try holding the key in start position and bang on the starter if it engages the engine.
