My diesel GMC Sierra 2500HD speedo stopped working. The cruise control still works, and all other guages on the dash work. The needle is pointing straight down...between 0 and 120. Fluctuates a little bit now and then, but never registers actual speed. My son-in-law removed the fuse to the guage, started the truck, and reinserted the fuse. This seemed to remedy the problem for about 5 miles of driving, then back to subzero speed. No problems with the way the truck runs or drives. Do I have to have the dash cluster replaced, and what can I expect that to cost me? If not that big of a deal, what do we troubleshoot next, since the fuse doesn't appear to be the problem? Thanks for the advice.

GMC has had a silent recall for the instrument panels on the 2003 Sierras. They will replace the instrument panel/ reimburse you if the problem occurs before 70,000 miles according to their notice they sent to me. Unfortunately what they wrote in the notice is not correct as I have an estimate to replace my instrument panel due to problems with my oil pressure gauge that are now manifesting themselves with the tach also. The estimate was when I just had over 60,000 miles on the truck and documents them (another shop) trying to diagnose the problem with the oil pressure gauge but GM refuses to fix it(more specifically the dealer) because the vehicle currently has more than 70,000 miles on it. So as long as you don't have over 70,000 when you take it in you might be OK. They sent out the notices in late OCT 2007.
