2002 GMC Sierra 4 wheel drive noise

When I engage the auto button or 4 hi button a noise starts that seems like grinding and as you start to turn the steering wheel it hops slightly.In 2 wheel it's good. Please help . thanks in advance , Bob

When the 4wd is engauged this is normal. The front diff is locked in. It will do this on dry pavement.
