2001 GMC Sierra check engine light

i have a check engine light that comes on i checked the owners manual and it said to check the gas cap to see if it was tight it wasn;t i took the cap off and put the cap back on the light stayed on also i smelled gas fumes when i took off the cap. my question is how do i turn off the light
