1997 GMC Sierra Four wheel drive

I was driving my truck in four wheel drive yesterday due to icy conditions, and while I was driving the four wheel drive quit working. When I press the button to engage the four wheel drive it just blinks and never engages. It does this when I try to engage 4hi and 4lo. It never made any kind of sound when it quit working.
