2002 GMC Safari 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

when the steering wheel is turned all the way to the left the alternator gage and the lights dim untill the wheel is turned slightly back to the right

I had the exact same problem on my 04. Underneath the passenger side, the positive large battery cable in the conduit to the starter had rubbed through on the moving steering parts. I replaced the conduit and strapped it up with zip ties. Works great now. I found this by getting someone to turn it in the driveway and I saw sparks underneath the van!
