The guage works intermittently. And sometimes fluctuates widely. I assumed it was the sending unit and have attempted to locate a replacement with no luck. Does this vehicle have a sending unit or a level sensor? If it is a sensor, why does it cost so much more than some sending units I've priced?

Check all the connectors in the fuel gauge circuit, move them around, unplug and re-insert them again may correct it.

My 150000 mi 97 Safari's gauge has not worked in years, I just use the odometer, start with a full tank at ZERO each time I get to 300 miles, I fill it up again. (reset odometer to 0 again)
Never ran out of gas doing it that way.
My gauge reads full all the time I figured if someone steals it, they will run out of gas, LOL!
