1987 GMC S15 Speedometer

I just purchased a 87 S15 pickup and the speedometer is off. I understand that I can chage out the gear at the trans. How do I know what gear to use for the replacement? I don't know the trans specs. This is a replaced trans. The speedo says 45 and I am really going 35. Any help would be appreciated

you need to know what color gear is on the trans, what trans you have, what rear end ratio you have and what tire size you have to change the gear. With a vehicle that old a dealer may be able to find one someplace. If not then you'll need to go to a trans shop and see if they have one of the correct color. the dealer (parts dept) may have the info of what gear you need after you give them al lyour info....
