Climate Control blows warm air when off.

I have a 1972 Cadillac Brougham and a 1987 Cadillac Brougham d'Elegance. Both have Climate Control. The compressor in the '72 has been replaced but the evaporator coil and dryer have died. The unit in the '87 works, for the most part (it doesn't work on the low setting). Question: the Climate Control in BOTH cars seem to emit heat from the floor vents when the Climate Control is in the OFF position. WHY? What can I do (or unplug) to prevent this? I love both cars but they are "toys" and I don't intend to dump a pot of money in to either of them. Thank you for a reply... George

George I have same problem with my 1982 Regency Brougham. Driving down the road warm air comes out vents(especially floor vents) with the climate control off. I even pulled fuse and still comes out. Temp gets pretty warm these hot days, as I need to re-charge air conditioner. Please let ne know if you et an answer. Good Luck! Ernie

Not sure if this applies to cars around your year, but it sort of sounds like when the heater core is heated by the hot cooling fluid, it's still allowing heat to enter the vents.
There should be a open/close port to block the air from passing by the heater core, it's possible it's not closing all the way allowing some air to warm and reach inside.
Also, it could simply be air warmed by the engine that is reaching the air vents through the firewall from a crack or seperation in the plastic.
