1997 Other GMC Models need help

i have a 1997 olds 88 and i was drining it to day and it started too sputter and then i had no gas pedel at first i though it was bad gas bu when i put it in nutral it ran fine but when i put it bac in drive and push the gas white smoke came out and then when i got off the gas it stop and when i pull over and put in park it ran fine so i turn it off to check it out nothin was leakin so i try too start it and it made a click but nothin will turn and right befor all this stuff happin i didnt here nothin comin form the motor thats what i can figer outwhats worng
